Kindergarten Eligibility

Per state law, students must be 5 years old on or before August 15, 2024, to enroll in kindergarten for the 2024-25 school year.

Registration for NEW and RETURNING students begins March 19, 2024.

  • Parents of students turning 5 by August 15, 2024, should follow the normal registration process. We encourage parents/guardians to begin the registration process as soon as possible. Access your child's existing account in PowerSchool or request a new account by contacting your child's school or the SEED Department at 901-416-6007.
  • Cut-off Date for Entering Kindergarten: Five-year-old kindergarteners who have not previously enrolled cannot be enrolled after the first 30 days of the school year, which is Sept. 9, 2024. Previously enrolled kindergarteners can be accepted at any time.
  • Immunizations and Physicals: All incoming kindergarteners to MSCS must submit proof of immunizations and physicals for enrollment. Students without complete immunizations cannot enroll until proof is provided.

KINDERGARTEN - 2024 EARLY-ENTRANCE SCREENING

Who may be screened?

Each year, MSCS screens 4-year-olds who will be turning 5 from August 16 to September 30 for early entrance into Kindergarten. For the 2024-25 school year, children whose birthdays fall between August 16, 2019, and September 30, 2019, may be screened to determine if they are eligible to enter kindergarten early.

Who should NOT be screened?

  • If a child will already be 5 years old on or before August 15, 2024, then they may be registered for kindergarten without screening.
  • If a child turns 5 after September 30, 2024, the child is not eligible for screening and must wait until the following year, fall 2025, to enroll in kindergarten.

If I am interested in getting my child screened, what should I do?

Early kindergarten entrance screening begins in June. Beginning Monday, May 13, parents may call the Department of Assessment and Accountability at 901-416-5450 to schedule an appointment for their child to be screened this summer for early kindergarten entry. Please remember that only children turning 5 years old from August 16 to September 30 are eligible for screening. Students who are already 5 years old by August 15 do NOT need to be screened.
